What to do this summer to prepare for college or university in the fall

Class of 2023: Congratulations on graduating from high school! For those of you who are heading off to college or university in the fall, here are some suggestions of things you can do this summer to prepare:

1.     Brush up on academic skills: Review key concepts from subjects that you anticipate studying in college or university. Refreshing your knowledge will help you start the academic year with confidence. You can access online resources, textbooks, take a summer school class or review materials to reinforce your understanding.

2.     Create a budget: College and university often require you to manage your finances independently. Take the time to create a budget plan for your expenses. Consider tuition fees, textbooks, housing costs, food, transportation, and other necessities. Learning how to manage your money effectively will be valuable during your post-secondary years.

3.     Explore the town/city: If you're moving to a new city for college or university, use the summer to explore the area. Familiarize yourself with local amenities, transportation options, and nearby attractions. This will help you feel more at home when you arrive in the fall.

4.     Complete necessary paperwork: Ensure you complete all the necessary paperwork for college or university enrollment. This includes submitting your acceptance letter, housing forms, financial aid documents, and any other required paperwork. Stay organized and meet all deadlines.

5.     Attend orientation programs: Most colleges and universities offer orientation programs for incoming students. These programs provide valuable information about campus life, academic expectations, and resources available to students. Attend these sessions to familiarize yourself with the campus and meet fellow students.

6.     Connect with your future roommate: If you have been assigned a roommate, reach out to them over the summer. Introduce yourself, discuss shared items, and establish expectations regarding living arrangements. Building a positive relationship with your roommate can make the transition to college or university life smoother.

7.     Relax and recharge: Transitioning to college or university can be exciting but also overwhelming. Take some time to relax, spend time with friends and family, and recharge before starting this new chapter. Taking care of your mental and physical well-being is important for a successful post-secondary experience.

Finally, remember that the summer is also a time to enjoy and celebrate your accomplishments. It's essential to strike a balance between preparation and enjoying your time off before the next phase of your education begins.
