Talking to young people about their futures

Over the years, we have talked with thousands of parents about academic and career choices for their children. All parents we speak to are supportive of their children and want nothing but success and happiness for them.

At the same time, most parents express concern and anxiety as they ponder the choices confronting their children. It’s hard not to experience apprehension when your 16- or 17-year-old is selecting high school courses that may change the way in which their life may unfold.

Parents who have had the pleasure of reviewing grade 11 and 12 course choices with their children know how confusing this can be. Should it be U, U/C or C level courses? What does it mean if it’s an open course? One math or two, and which two should it be?

And the range of high school courses available today is mind-boggling for those of us who remember simpler times. No wonder parents’ eyes glaze over and their brains begin to seize up as they try to help their children navigate high school course selection.

High school course selection is important because the courses students take impact what college or university programs they can apply to. Students and their families have to explore career and educational planning questions earlier than ever before.

The good news is that young people do possess a large body of information which can guide their academic and career planning, if they know where to look. Parents can help their children facilitate this process effectively. And when they need more help, at Career Solutions we help students and their families to make meaningful career and academic decisions that will value their interests and strengths.
