Career testing can help with post-secondary choices

One of the most common questions we get from students we work with, and their families, relates to the use of assessments in the educational and career planning process. When trying to figure out the often-confusing choices about which post-secondary schools and programs might be right for them, students and their parents are looking for reliable tools that can help them navigate the maze of different directions that are out there.

For many people, the idea that there is a magic test that will point students in the right direction is very appealing. While career assessments are not a magic wand that can be waved and put you in the right place, there are some reliable instruments that can provide helpful information to support educational and career planning.

Interest and personality indicators provide a very specific type of information. They do not tell you where you should go, and they do not tell you what you should do. Instead, they tell you what kinds of work (and related academic programs) people who have a lot in common with you have chosen happily and successfully.

By using career and educational assessments, students can make considerable progress in finding occupations that will value their strengths and interests. The assessments tell you where you should be looking and help show students where they should focus their exploration process. It is then quite possible to select programs and schools that will help you move confidently toward your career interests, and also to identify work and extracurricular activities that will help you explore these interests more and achieve your goals.
